Kookaburras are best known for their
unmistakable call, which is uncannily like loud, echoing human laughter
--good-natured, if rather hysterical, merriment in the case of the well-known
Laughing Kookaburra (Dacelo novaeguineae); and maniacal cackling in the case of
the slightly smaller Blue-winged Kookaburra (D. leachii). They are generally not
closely associated with water, and can be found in habitats ranging from humid
forest to arid savanna, but also in suburban and residential areas near running
water and where food can be searched for easily. Learn more about kookaburras at

Australian Kookaburra Coins
Deemed legal
tender under the Australian Currency Act of 1965, the
Australian Silver Kookaburra is known for its design and
beauty among some of the most desirable coins in the
world. Its intricate design, which changes every year,
can be seen through the first-class, elegant finish. In
fact, the core design of this coin integrates an
exquisite, proof-like frosting.
On the back of
the coin is featured the kookaburra bird, most commonly
found in Australia. The front of the coin shows Her
Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and a monetary denomination.
The world's
largest Kingfisher, otherwise known as the Kookaburra,
can measure in body length of up to half a meter. These
birds are best known for the sound they make, hard to
miss yet eerily echoing the sound of a loud human
laughter. Another name they have acquired due to this
trait is "laughing jackass". Their habitats can be found
in Eastern and Southern Australia. The Kookaburras live
in community groups, which can be identified with their
calls. These sounds are also used to defend their
territory, sometimes they will even resort to force if
needed. |
